Annual Awards Ceremony 2012
WHEAT Trust participated in the Artscape Women’s Festival from 8th until the 11th of August. On the 10th of August WHEAT held an awards ceremony that honoured the women who received a grant from WHEAT Trust. On the 11th of August WHEAT in cooperation with Planet Productions and Code Teen, hosted a Girl Talk! Workshop for young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Western Cape.
At the awards ceremony on Friday, 10 women from the Western Cape who received a grant for their organisation in the past financial year received recognition of outstanding achievements. While two other women who have been running their organisation for over 10 years and have been walking with WHEAT Trust were awarded with R1000 each.
Each of these organisations seeks to improve the lives of many disadvantaged women and men within their communities. This is done through a variety of ways, such as income generation, home based care, and garden projects among other things. However, before they received their awards, the Saki Khamva Youth Development Project gave a very good performance of traditional dancing. There was also a panel discussion about fundraising opportunities, online media, LGBTI issues and past grantee experiences.
On Saturday, 50 girls were brought to Artscape theatre from various areas in and around Cape Town. They enjoyed open dialogue with a panel of boys and one girl, as well as practical advice for going through the teenage years.
Overall, the combination of these two great events and the celebration of WHEAT Trust’s 14th birthday on the 9th of August made for a spectacular week and successful Women’s Festival. Special thanks to our sponsor, Santam, our panelists, and the Cape Town School of Photography for gorgeous pictures!
