WHEAT launches the Honour a Woman campaign

The 18th of August was definitely a day to celebrate. Not only was it the day that the WHEAT Women’s Fund celebrated their 12th birthday, but it was also the day that the Honour a Woman campaign was launched.
The support that was given to WHEAT was amazing and a true expression of the love that many have in their hearts for women.

The proceedings started with the ceremonial and commemorative lighting of the WHEAT Women’s Fund candle. The director of ceremonies Talia Sanhewe, an award-winning television reporter and media personality, set the exciting and exhilarating vibe from the word go. Many inspirational words were spoken, starting with the warm welcome from WHEAT’s Board Chair, Freda Daniels. Our keynote speaker, Nosimo Balindlela, Member of Parliament, shared a few of her experiences with WHEAT and WHEAT’s grantees. The launch of the Honour a Woman campaign was conducted by Sue Howell, WHEAT’s Executive Director. Shirley Walters, Bregje Piper and Tina Thiart shared their initiatives in honouring women special to them.

After the delicious main course, Wendy Ackerman and Tina Thiart elaborated on next year’s 1000 Women United Against Domestic Violence Lunch and called for ideas to be forwarded to make this one-of-a-kind event a success.
The WHEAT birthday cake was cut by one of the founders, Anne Hope, to recognize the founding principles and continued relevance of the work of WHEAT. Sally Timmel enjoyed the lemon sauce so much that she negotiated the recipe secret with chef Rob at the Vineyard’s Myoga Restaurant, and auctioned it on the spot for R500.
For the perfect ending to an already spectacular event, Bregje Piper thanked all who showed their support and love for WHEAT not just by attending the event but for the lifelong contributions and dedication which they have shown to WHEAT. WHEAT raised in excess of R150,000 on this special day, and pledges are still coming in.
